Trans-Canada Trail Brochure

Wendy Hurst and Lesley Killough have completed their brochure showing the Trans-Canada Trail routes through the City of Castlegar and surrounding area .

This is a "Friends" community project assumed by us to help trail users locate the Columbia and Western railbed in the vicinity of Castlegar.

For example, the brochure could be used by those who might want to take the Columbia River Trail into the city of Trail after riding (or hiking) into Castlegar from Christina Lake on the Columbia and Western end of the Kettle Valley Line.

The project was financed by a $1,500 dollar grant from the RDCK Area "J" Planning Commission. Once again, many thanks are due to the APC for the grant and to Wendy and Lesley for work so well done.

It is "Friends" good fortune to have such willing and knowledgeable members

Copies of the brochure are available at the CPR Station and the Chamber of Commerce.

Why does a "slight tax increase" cost you $200 and a "substantial tax cut" only saves you thirty cents?

FROM THE TRAILHEAD

Over the past summer, we have received a great deal of interesting feedback from the comment sheets located in the boxes at Waldie Island, Skattebo Reach and Columbia trails. The majority of users of the trails naturally come from Castlegar and the surrounding communities; however visitors from other parts of Canada and the United States, as well as from Europe, took the time to register their observations and opinions.

Waldie Island Trail appears to be a favourite of many local families and birders. Comments such as "one of our favourite spots" and "always enjoyable" are typical. A family from Cranbrook wrote that "the people who live in Castlegar are very fortunate!" The Kootenay River Trails attract the more adventurous hikers who report the Brilliant Overlook Trail as "a gem of a walk" and "whew! what a workout!!". The Skattebo Reach Trail is popular as an "out and back hike" when combined with the Doukhobor Waterline Trail and McPhee Canyon Trail.

One of the more amusing comments from the Columbia Trail came from a Nakusp visitor whose "skinny dipping was interrupted by two (expletives deleted) fishermen!".

A recurring theme expressed by many users was a sincere appreciation for the time and effort volunteered by all those who help to keep the trails in such good shape
